The Role of Local Government in the Provision of Affordable Housing is a report Commissioned by a group of local authorities and Local Government New Zealand on the question of what councils can do to encourage the provision of affordable housing in the towns and cities. Prepared by McKinlay Douglas Ltd, the report canvasses international experience, the role housing plays in promoting social and economic wellbeing (councils are required to promote wellbeing under the LGA2002) and provides an overview of housing at a local level. The value of the paper is its approach to the different strategies councils can undertake in order to improve the provision of affordable housing, given its important role in well being. It examines different approaches such as the role of regulation, planning, incentives, provision and leadership. Copies of the report are available from june.lewis@lgnz.co.nz at a cost $20.00 incl gst.
